Key takeaways
- • Instagram has no button to unfollow everyone at once. Apps that promise one can only do it by logging in as you, which is how accounts get action-blocked.
- • The fast, safe way: get the full list of who doesn’t follow you back, open many profiles at once, and tap Unfollow yourself.
- • GhostList’s Clean-up opens 10 to 100 profiles per click in Advanced mode, each in its own tab, and remembers where you stopped.
- • Keep it to batches of 20 to 30, a couple of hours apart, two or three times a day. A list of 1,000 takes around ten days.
- • If Instagram says Try Again Later, stop completely. That message is an action block, and pushing through makes it longer.
Following list out of control? You are not going to tap through 800 profiles one by one, and you shouldn’t have to. Instagram doesn’t give you a select-all button, but you can still get through a long list in a few short sessions a day, without handing your password to anyone.
Some people call it unfollowmaxxing: clearing out every account that doesn’t follow you back, as fast as Instagram allows. Here is how to do it properly.
Why there is no “unfollow all” button
Instagram doesn’t offer one, and it doesn’t let other apps do it through an official route either. Every app that promises one-click unfollowing works the same way: you give it your username and password, it logs in as you from its own servers, and it unfollows people as fast as it can.
That is the exact pattern Instagram looks for. It ends in an action block at best, and a disabled account at worst. Our guide on whether unfollower apps are safe goes through why.
So the goal is to make the boring parts fast (finding who to unfollow, opening their profiles) and keep the one action Instagram cares about, the tap on Unfollow, in your hands.
Step 1: Get the full list of who doesn’t follow you back
Scrolling your following list and checking each account is the slow way. Instagram gives you the real list instead: request your data export, choose Followers and following, format JSON, date range All time. Our export guide shows every screen.
Upload the zip to GhostList and it shows everyone you follow who doesn’t follow you back. GhostList calls them ghosts. You never give GhostList your Instagram password.
Step 2: Open lots of profiles at once
Open Clean-up from your ghosts list. In Normal mode it shows one profile at a time. With more than 20 ghosts, GhostList suggests Advanced mode, and that is the one you want here.
In Advanced mode, each click opens a group of profiles, each in its own tab. You choose the group size, anywhere from 10 to 100. The first time, your browser blocks the pop-ups: click the pop-up icon in the address bar and choose Always allow for GhostList. You only do this once.
Opening tabs unfollows nobody. Instagram sees nothing until you tap Unfollow yourself.
Step 3: Unfollow, mark, repeat
Go through the tabs and tap Unfollow on each profile. Then come back to GhostList and mark the whole group as unfollowed in one click. GhostList saves your progress, so the next session starts where this one ended.
How many at once is safe?
Instagram publishes no official limit. What reliably works, according to our unfollow limits guide, is around 100 to 150 a day, in batches of 20 to 30, spread over several hours. It’s the speed that triggers a block, not the total: 1,000 unfollows is fine over ten days and risky in one afternoon.
New accounts, and accounts that were blocked recently, get far less room. If that’s you, start with batches of 10.
Unfollowmaxxing: tips and tricks
- Set the tab count to 20 or 30. One click opens one safe batch, so you never have to count.
- Close each tab as you go. Tap Unfollow, then press Ctrl+W (Cmd+W on a Mac). The next profile is right there.
- Use a laptop. Working through 30 tabs is quick on a computer and painful on a phone.
- Spread your sessions. Morning, lunch, evening. Two or three batches a day, then stop.
- Skip a day now and then. Perfectly regular activity every single day is a pattern too.
- Decide who stays first. Your ghosts include celebrities, brands and friends’ businesses that were never going to follow back. Hit Skip on anyone you want to keep.
- Only mark what you actually unfollowed. If a tab didn’t load or you changed your mind, leave it unmarked so it comes back later.
- Stop at the first “Try Again Later”. That’s an action block. Stop completely for at least a day, and don’t switch devices to get around it, which only makes it longer.
- Check your work. When you’re done, upload a fresh export. Anything you missed is still on the list.
What to avoid
- Any app or browser extension that asks for your Instagram password.
- Unfollowing hundreds in one sitting, even by hand.
- Following people and unfollowing them again and again. Doing it to the same account is noticeable, and it’s the pattern behind the follow/unfollow method going wrong.
Will people know you unfollowed them?
No. Instagram doesn’t notify anyone when you unfollow them. They would have to check their followers list to notice. Our post on unfollow notifications covers the details.
