Key takeaways
- • GhostList finds unfollowers by comparing two uploads of your Instagram data export. Your first upload can’t show any, because there’s nothing to compare it with yet.
- • Upload a fresh export about two weeks later and the Who unfollowed you page lists everyone who left, with the date GhostList spotted it.
- • Anyone who unfollowed you and you still follow becomes a ghost: you follow them, they don’t follow you back. That puts them in Clean-up automatically.
- • GhostList never unfollows anyone for you. It opens each profile and you unfollow them on Instagram yourself.
- • Instagram doesn’t notify people when you unfollow them.
Someone stopped following you on Instagram, and you want to stop following them back. Instagram won’t tell you who it was. It keeps no record of past unfollows at all, so there’s nothing for any app to look up after the fact.
GhostList compares instead. Upload your followers today, upload them again in two weeks, and anyone who left in between shows up by name. From there it takes a few taps to unfollow them back, at whatever pace you like.
How GhostList knows who unfollowed you
Instagram lets you download your own data, including the full list of your followers and the accounts you follow. Each time you upload that file, GhostList keeps the usernames inside it. On your next upload it checks the new follower list against the previous one, and anyone who was there before and isn’t now goes on your unfollowers list. Your first upload can’t show any unfollowers, because it’s the snapshot everything later is compared to.
The date next to each name is the day GhostList spotted the change, which is the day of your newer upload. The person left sometime between your two uploads, so if you upload every two weeks, the date is accurate to within two weeks.
Step 1: Request your Instagram data
You need the official export, the one Instagram makes for you. In the export settings, choose Followers and following, set the format to JSON, and pick All time as the date range. Our step-by-step export guide has a screenshot for every tap.
Instagram emails you the file, usually within 30 minutes, though it can take up to 48 hours. It arrives as a zip file.
You never give GhostList your Instagram password. The zip stays on your device, and GhostList saves only the usernames inside it, so your next upload has something to compare against.
Step 2: Upload it, then upload again in two weeks
Drop the zip into GhostList. It reads your followers and following, and you see your numbers straight away.
The first upload already shows your ghosts, the people you follow who don’t follow you back. Unfollowers come with the second one.
In about two weeks, request a fresh export from Instagram and upload that one too. Two weeks is a guide: a longer gap catches more people per upload, and a shorter one gives you tighter dates.
Step 3: Open “Who unfollowed you”
After your second upload, the Who unfollowed you page lists everyone who left between the two, most recent first. Tap a name and their profile opens on Instagram.
Before you unfollow anyone, look at what loads. If you can still see their profile and posts, they unfollowed you. If the profile won’t load for you at all, you may have been blocked instead. Our guide to telling a block from an unfollow explains the difference.
Unfollower detection is part of the paid plan. On the free plan you can still upload and see your first five ghosts.
Step 4: Unfollow them back
With only a few names, you can do it straight from the list. Tap a name to open their profile on Instagram, and unfollow them from there.
With a lot of names, Clean-up is faster.
Clean-up for a long list
Everyone who unfollowed you and you still follow is now a ghost: you follow them, and they don’t follow you back. So they’re already in your ghosts list, and Clean-up works through that list for you. In the example above, the first upload showed 291 ghosts. After the second there are 294, and the three new ghosts are the three people who left.
Clean-up covers all your ghosts, including celebrities and brands that never followed you back in the first place. Skip anyone you want to keep, like a friend’s business or an account you actually enjoy.
Clean-up has two modes. In Normal mode you see one profile at a time. Tap Open profile, unfollow them on Instagram, then come back and tap Mark unfollowed.
In Advanced mode, each click opens several profiles at once, each in its own tab. Your browser blocks that the first time, so look for the pop-up icon in the address bar and choose Always allow for GhostList. You only have to do it once. You can set anywhere from 10 to 100 tabs per click, and mark a whole group as unfollowed in one go.
When you have more than 20 people to get through, GhostList suggests switching to Advanced mode. Either way, GhostList saves your progress, so you can stop and come back later.
Why GhostList doesn’t unfollow anyone for you
Apps that unfollow people automatically have to sign in to Instagram as you. Instagram treats that as automation, and it’s a common way to end up with an action block.
GhostList never asks for your password and never touches your account. It opens the profile and you unfollow. To Instagram, it looks like you unfollowing someone, because that’s exactly what it is.
That also leaves you in charge of the pace. Instagram publishes no official limit on unfollows. Our unfollow limits guide puts the safe working figure at around 100 to 150 a day, in batches of 20 to 30 spread over a few hours. Accounts get blocked for unfollowing too fast: a thousand unfollows is fine over a couple of weeks and risky in one afternoon.
Opening tabs in Advanced mode unfollows nobody. You still unfollow each one yourself, so you can spread them across the day. Setting the tab count to 20 or 30 keeps each batch at the size the limits guide suggests.
If you track more than one account
Each Instagram account in GhostList has its own uploads, and unfollowers are only ever compared within the same account. Instagram’s export doesn’t say whose data it is, so before saving an upload GhostList shows which account it’s going to and asks you to confirm. Saving one account’s export under another would compare two different follower lists, and the unfollowers list would fill up with people who never left. The yearly plan tracks up to five accounts.
Will they know you unfollowed them?
No. Instagram doesn’t send a notification when you unfollow someone. They would only find out by checking whether you’re still in their followers list. Our post on unfollow notifications covers the other ways people notice.
After the clean-up
Once you’ve been through every profile, GhostList shows how many ghosts you cleaned up. Then the cycle starts again: request a fresh export in about two weeks, upload it, and the next round of unfollowers shows up with its dates.
